Surf

Surfing is a great sport that many people wants to try. The surf school makes sure that you learn the basics of this sport in a smooth and easy way. The lessons are normally 2 hours long. The first part of the lesson is on the sand where students learn the basics and then you move to the white water for practice. You can choose private lessons as well as group lessons for beginners and intermediates.  Single or multi-day classes available.

Dominical is the ultimate surfer paradise, with many hidden breaks along miles of sandy beach. Certain areas are just beginning to be explored for surf, so there are no crowds to date. Water temperature is generally warm, so no wetsuit is required, although some mornings are chilly and due to the wind, so a rash guard can come in handy to stave off the chill. The lineups are generally friendly and fun, with local surfers “giving” newbies waves as a gesture of kindness.

The dry season surf is from December to April with south groundswells consistently hitting the coast, producing clean and fun waves. Morning and afternoon glassing are a common thing during this time of year and the waves are generally waist to shoulder high, and clean and open faced. In January, you can watch baby manta rays swimming in the waves from the lineup. They are not aggressive and present no threat to surfers in the water. It is also common to see dolphins playing in the water while you are surfing.

During the wet season, May to November, the waves are generally bigger and the conditions for surfing can change rapidly depending on the local weather tendencies. The beauty of this time of year is that the number of people in the water surfing is reduced significantly. Also, the sun is not always present giving surfers a break from the high temperatures that are ever present in the dry season. Which means less people and less sunscreen needed! When the big swells hit the coast, people head a little further south to some more protected point breaks, so the reality is that you can surf pretty much 365 days a year on this gorgeous Pacific coast.

Surf lessons consist of a beach portion where your surf instructor tells you a bit about the area, goes over basic ocean and surfing safety, and explains the technique of how to stand up on your surfboard. If you have prior surfing experience, your instructor will ask some questions to obtain a general sense of your surfing ability and will assess if there are specifics that need to be reviewed while on the beach. Your surf instructor will then answer any questions you may have before leading a brief stretching session, and then you will head out to the water.
